Director, Digital Content

OVERVIEW & ACHIEVEMENTS

As Director of Digital Content, I managed a team of four individuals responsible for the day-to-day content operation of the AMA.org website. In addition to managing content distribution, I produced special digital projects and website features related to major news stories, cultural events and holidays. At in-person events, my team oversaw event coverage including the creation and distribution of real-time video, audio, and image content.

This period resulted in the AMA’s first-ever real-time digital content workflow. Historically a static design for basic organizational information, the website became a source of dynamic and diverse content offerings. These efforts set the stage for a major content migration to a new content management system and the introduction of data-supported content management decisions.

I am a decisive, data-driven manager and I believe decisions should be made for the good of the project based on shared strategic goals. I have gained a significant depth of experience in leadership, team management, and stakeholder management. I have long been a member of the leadership team and am accustomed to working directly with executive staff, board members, and donors.

2012 - 2015

Director of Publishing, Journals
American Marketing Association

OVERVIEW & ACHIEVEMENTS

As Director of Publishing, I was responsible for the business management and publication of four major academic journals. I oversaw an in-house production team of four individuals and managed relationships with vendors, freelancers, and contributors.

I was responsible for identifying strategic partnerships to raise journal profiles, ensure research credibility, and increase competitiveness in digital distribution. Included in this was the launch of ancillary digital publications intended to raise awareness and media coverage of journal research.

The journals reached a major milestone during this period when we published our first articles designed and optimized for mobile devices. Today, the journal program serves as a cornerstone of the AMA’s brand credibility.

2010 - 2012
Managing Editor, Journals
American Marketing Association

OVERVIEW & ACHIEVEMENTS

As Managing Editor, I led the transition from a print-first publishing flow to a digital-first editorial and production operation. This transformation dramatically reduced the publishing timeline by months, increased licensing opportunities, and ensured a professional, contemporary publishing experience for editors, authors, and reviewers. By 2012, all back-end journal production had been aligned along with manuscript submission systems to create a replicable, logical, uniform publishing operation that mitigated the chances of errors and delays. Cumulatively, the changes I implemented amounted to a major operational pivot for the journals program, paving the way for continued digital innovation.

WORK PORTFOLIO

  • Digital transformation

  • Editorial production alignment

  • Academic community relations

  • Back-end process development/refinement

  • PR program development

  • UX redesign across publications

  • Vendor/partner management

  • International community outreach

APPLIED SKILLS

  • Strategic thinking

  • Creative Leadership

  • Collaboration

  • Communication

  • Business acumen

  • Budget management

  • Team management

  • Pricing/marketing strategy

Perspective: STRATEGIC THINKING

As a publisher and producer, I have been responsible for significant operational and financial decisions. Often met with competing priorities and scarce resources, I favor practical long-game thinking without losing sight of the daily challenges that come with complex projects. I seek a balance between pushing for innovation while being mindful of practical requirements dictated by timeline and budget priorities.

2006 - 2010

Associate Managing Editor, Journals

American Marketing Association

OVERVIEW & ACHIEVEMENTS

As Associate Managing Editor, I was responsible for the day-to-day peer-review management for four journals. During this period, I managed the migration of two journals onto ScholarOne Manuscripts submission software which brought uniformity to critical backend production processes. From a user perspective, all four journals could now be viewed under a single publishing brand. These processes remain in effect to this day.

This period marked a major leap forward for organizational brand alignment that brought greater awareness to the AMA as a publisher of leading academic research. Likewise, this would be the first time all four manuscript submission processes would be overseen by a single individual. This was critical to creating an airtight system for identifying and troubleshooting issues which then could be resolved across all four journals systematically. All of these efforts would create a solid foundation on which to effectively modernize the journal publishing processes.

WORK PORTFOLIO

  • Manage manuscript submission systems (ScholarOne)

  • Migrate publications to new submission systems

  • On-ramping and software customization for new editors

  • Editorial Review Board management

  • Liaison to academic community

  • Awards process management

  • Manage in-person editorial board events

APPLIED SKILLS

  • Strategic thinking

  • Marketing functions

  • Creative thinking

  • Project management

  • Business acumen

  • Communications

  • Public Speaking/Presentation

  • Training

Perspective: COMMUNICATION

I believe successful inter-team collaboration can be achieved by communicating liberally, effectively, and always in good faith. I have served as the primary contact for a diverse community of academics and executives including 10 full-time editors, over 50 associate editors and hundreds of editorial board reviewers from around the world. Doing so with diplomacy, integrity, and respect was integral to establishing consensus through sometimes difficult periods of new policy development and strategic change.

2004 - 2006

Media Studies Instructor

Ohio University School of Film

OVERVIEW & ACHIEVEMENTS

Course development and instruction was a major pillar of my graduate work in film and media studies. I had the opportunity to design semester-long, for-credit courses on topics including politics, history and the representation of women in cinema. I designed each course to combine film viewing with critical reading and writing. I taught in-person twice a week where I provided lectures, facilitated discussions, and conducted screenings.
